why do we celebrate diwali

The word Diwali means “row of light”. We also know Diwali as Deepavali originated from Sanskrit words: “deep” means lamp and “vali” means row. It is a festival that epitomizes the victory of good over evil. We celebrate Diwali after 20 days of Dussehra(when lord Ram defeated Raavan). This festival is to celebrate the return of Lord Ram to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile. Diwali is harbinger as the triumph of good over evil. This is celebration of light, love and victory.

The most significant thing of Diwali is that we celebrate it on the darkest night (known as amavasya) but still there is light all around as Diwali is celebration of lights!!

I will split the preparation of Diwali into 4 parts so that it will be easy to manage and will not put you in funk too. So without any delay lets prep up for Diwali.

Preparation No 1# Cleaning and decorating your home

Cleanliness is next to Godliness“ We all know about this phrase and believe it too. The idea behind this phrase is that those who are pure and healthful are close to God. Purity refers to moral purity and personal hygiene. So cleaning and de-cluttering are one of the old and vital ritual of Diwali. And people clean each nook and corners of their houses before Diwali arrives. During this festival of light, we worship Goddess Laxmi and welcome to our home. The cleaning signifies we clean the house to welcome Goddess Laxmi. We as an excellent host welcome positivity and get rid of unwanted stuff from our lives. Cleanliness has a very positive impact on our life.

This entire chapter of cleanliness should not be daunting to you. Don’t target to clean top to bottom of your house in a single day. Always remember festivals are for enjoying with our loved ones and feel stress free and relax. So plan a few days earlier which area of your home need deep cleaning, which area just come under regular cleaning. Try to involve your family members in doing these chores, this preparation for Diwali will give you the vibes of festivity.

After cleaning, next comes decoration. We always want some new look of our home on festivals or special occasions. New look doesn’t always demand for buying new home decor accessories, you can try some DIY to create a new look of your nest. Changing bed covers, table covers, cushion covers give a whole fresh look.

Preparation No 2 # Pre-plan your Diwali menu

No occasion is complete without a happy tummy. Diwali is not only festival of row of lights but also row of dishes spread over table(I feel so). After giving a festive look to your home we feel more hungry and so plan the Diwali menu ahead. Discuss with your family before deciding Diwali menu as everyone’s preference should be there on the menu and everyone’s effort should be there also. You need to decide the menu so that you are able to do enough pre-preparation as on the day of the festival you will not wish to spend much time in kitchen.

Tips to plan your Diwali menu :-

  • Categorize your menu in three parts: Sweets, snacks and main course.
  • After deciding menu, list out the ingredients you need to prepare those recipes, so buy it beforehand.
  • Prepare your sweets one or two days before, so choose the sweets that can be stored for few days.
  • Do all the cuttings and marination if required for your recipe the night before Diwali. It will save much time next morning and will be easy to cook.
  • Don’t wait for the evening to start cooking, try to finish your cooking within afternoon so that you can enjoy your Diwali evening stress free.

“When you look good you feel good” So now after decoration your home and preparing mouthwatering dishes it is your turn to get ready for Diwali. As you are planning everything beforehand, why not plan your outfit too? If you have the ritual of wearing new clothes, then you can buy a dress for yourself and your family members, otherwise you can use your existing clothes kept in your wardrobe to wear again. These days everyone is much fortunate enough to have a wonderful collection of apparel that they hardly wear them once or twice so it will be a good idea to use them once again. The outfit you are choosing to wear on Diwali give a try to them if they need some alterations or ironing, you can get them done within time.

Preparation No 4 # Keep your Diwali gifts ready

This one of the most important thing to prepare for Diwali. Gifts are token of love and blessings from our family members and friends. Diwali is a festival of love and prosperity. We exchange gifts on Diwali, this is a way to show our love and gratitude to our loved ones. Giving gifts during Diwali has a holy meaning, your best wishes and love are packed generously in those gifts. Make a list of whom you are planning to gift and check your budget how much you want to spend on gifts. Then start checking online store or your local shop where you find gifts of your choice. You can also try some DIY, it will save much plus your effort to make the gift will always be praised. The true meaning of Diwali gift is to share your love, not money.
